Educational information only. Not tax, legal, or financial advice. 1099-NEC Filing is not the IRS and is not affiliated with it. Check IRS.gov and consider a qualified tax professional. Short answer: If your business paid an individual contractor, or another nonemployee, $2,000 or more for services in 2026, you generally file Form 1099-NEC with the IRS and give the payee a copy. The stated due date is January 31. In 2027 that day is a Sunday, so the filing is expected to be due Monday, February 1, 2027. That February date is our calculation from the IRS next-business-day rule, not a date the IRS has published for 2027.

A simple payer workflow

This is a checklist, not advice tailored to your business.

  • Collect a Form W-9 before you first pay a contractor.
  • Track payments per payee during the year.
  • In January, review who reached the threshold or had federal income tax withheld.
  • Count information returns. 10 or more in total, of all types, including Forms W-2, generally must be filed electronically.
  • File with the IRS and furnish the payee copy by the due date.

The 1099 Checker sorts a list of 2026 payments into file, no 1099-NEC, or check further. It runs in the browser. It does not save or send what you type. The calendar page builds an .ics file for the expected February 1, 2027 date and two earlier reminders.

FAQ

Is IRIS free?

The IRS describes the IRIS Taxpayer Portal as free, web-based filing. It needs a Transmitter Control Code (TCC). The IRS says TCC processing can take up to 45 days, so apply early if you plan to use it.

Do I have a 1099 duty if I am not in business?

The IRS says you are not required to file an information return if you are not engaged in a trade or business. Personal payments are outside this guide.

What we could not verify

These items stay open. Nothing in this list is stated as a 2027 fact.

  • Publication 1099 (general instructions) was not read. The inflation-adjusted threshold for payments made after 2026 is not published, and no number for 2027 is stated here.
  • State filing rules vary and are not covered. Many states have their own requirements.
  • Worker classification (employee versus contractor) is not decided here. See IRS guidance and consider a qualified professional.
