Short answer: The IRS charges separate penalties for failing to file a correct information return on time and for failing to furnish a correct payee statement on time. The charge is per return and per statement. The table below is the IRS table for returns due in 2026 and, for comparison, 2025. no penalty amount for returns due in 2027 is published in the page we read, and this site states none and estimates none.
No 2027 penalty estimate. No 2027 penalty amounts are stated. This site does not estimate them. Do not multiply the 2026 tier by a guess. Do not treat the 2026 column as the bill for a 1099-NEC that is due in 2027.
IRS table: charge per return or per payee statement
| Year the return is due | Up to 30 days late | 31 days late through August 1 | After August 1, or not filed | Intentional disregard |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | $60 | $130 | $340 | $680 |
| 2025 | $60 | $130 | $330 | $660 |
| 2027 | not published. No amount is estimated on this site. | |||
A 1099-NEC for payments made in 2026 is due in 2027. The amounts for that year are not in the table we read. The IRS says the maximum penalty differs for small and large businesses, and that there is no maximum for intentional disregard. Those maximums are in Publication 1099, which we did not read, so no maximum dollar figure is copied here.
Ways the IRS describes to limit penalties
- File and furnish by the due date, with correct information.
- File a waiver on Form 8508 if you have a hardship that keeps you from e-filing when e-file is required.
- Apply for an extension on Form 8809 and file by the extended date. The IRS says payee-statement extensions use a separate fax request. Form 8809 details for 1099-NEC in 2027 were not read.
If a penalty is assessed
The IRS may remove or reduce a penalty when you acted in good faith and can show reasonable cause. If you receive Notice 972CG, the page says to respond within 45 days, or 60 days for filers outside the United States. Interest is charged on penalties. The IRS says interest is not removed unless the penalty is.
This page is not a penalty calculator. The checker does not output a dollar penalty for any year.
