Why the forms get mixed up

before 2020, contractor pay was reported on Form 1099-MISC, and it is now generally Form 1099-NEC. That history sentence is background. It was not checked against the IRS pages read for this guide.

If you pay a contractor by card or through a payment app, the IRS says that payment is reported by the processor on Form 1099-K, not by you on Form 1099-NEC. The checker follows that rule when you mark “paid by card or app.”
