Short answer: The IRS states that for payments made before 2026 the 1099-NEC reporting threshold is $600, and for payments made in 2026 it is $2,000. For payments made after 2026, see Publication 1099 for the inflation-adjusted threshold. The instructions say the threshold may be adjusted for inflation beginning in calendar year 2027. no 2027 dollar threshold is published in the pages we read, and none is stated here.
What changed, and what did not
| Item | Rule in the pages we read |
|---|---|
| 1099-NEC services or attorney payments, 2026 | $2,000 or more during the year |
| 1099-NEC, 2025 and earlier | $600 or more |
| Backup withholding | If you withheld federal income tax, file Form 1099-NEC regardless of the amount |
| 1099-MISC (rents, other income, medical payments) | The IRS guide shows $2,000 for 2026 for several boxes. Some boxes keep other thresholds, such as royalties at $10 and fish for resale at $600 |
| Form 1099-K (platforms) | More than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions for third-party settlement organizations, per the IRS guide table |
| Payments made in 2027 | threshold not published. No number is stated. |
The IRS instructions also say that in 2026 the threshold for backup withholding on the payments they cover rose to $2,000. Filing is still required, at any amount, when federal income tax is withheld.
A made-up example
You paid a freelance designer $1,800 in 2026 for services. That is below $2,000, so a 1099-NEC is generally not required, unless you withheld federal income tax. You paid another contractor $2,000. That meets “at least $2,000,” so you generally file.
The checker uses those two rows as its made-up example. Whether you track smaller amounts for your own books is a separate question. This page covers only the IRS filing threshold we read.
